Oldie, but Goodies


Math
  • Unit 7 focus is on division of fractions and whole numbers. We are exploring different division strategies and with whole number, fractions and decimals. 
  • This week we worked with multiplication and division involving powers of 10.  
  • Next we will finish up Unit 7, review and assess the whole unit. 
  • After Unit 7 we will reflect on the areas of the 5th grade curriculum that might need a bit more review and that will take us to the end of the year :) 
  • Our May Number Corner will be focused on ordered pairs/graphing skills and converting liquid measurement from customary units to metric units. 
Literacy this week
  • This week we continued to work on our end of year chapter book reading/projects!
  • It is great to see them all with books in their hands :)

Social Studies
  • Whenever we can find some time in these past few weeks, we will be doing some map skills learning about the United States. 
Science
Our fourth unit will be on Earth Systems:  We will work to answer the question: What can determine how much water is available for human use?

  • Our first chapter will focus on : Why is East Ferris running out of water while West Ferris is not? 
  • Our second chapter will focus on : Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris? 
  • Our third chapter will focus on : Why is there more water vapor getting cold over West Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Our fourth chapter will focus on : Why is there more water vapor high up over West  Ferris than East Ferris?
  • Our fifth chapter will focus on : How can East Ferris turn wastewater into clean freshwater? 
SELS/Health lessons
  • We are finished with all of our SELS and Health lessons for the year. 
  • Randall Way Video for May is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom.  Our May goal is 1,100 paws by being an ALLY to try and earn a popsicle treat.

  • Permission slips for our last two field trips are due soon. Please try to return these as soon as possible.  
  • Please consider joining us for our upcoming field trips as a chaperone.

    In order for Thursday, June 5th to be a success, we need as many parent volunteers as possible.  More parents allow for smaller groups and flexibility for everyone.  If you are able, we would appreciate any help on June 5th.

    In order for you to be a chaperone, you will need to be approved for Level 2 volunteering tasks which involves a background check.  I recognize this can be an inconvenience, but unless we have you on our Level 2 approved list, we can not allow you to join us........  start the process by visiting the

  • This week we finished up some division work and then did some district assessments on Thursday and Friday.
  • Next week we will work with multiplying and dividing powers of 10.  After that we will look at division with decimals one more time, review and assess Unit 7.  
  • After Unit 7 we will reflect on the areas of the 5th grade curriculum that might need a bit more review and that will take us to the end of the year :)

  • We also took an district reading test this week.

  • This week we worked on a slide show presentation and poster to answer the question above. 
  • This will be our LAST unit of this module!! 
  • Next week we will change gears and and do some chapter book reading and projects to end out the year. 
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.  

Social Studies/Science
  • This week we did our Human Growth and Development lessons for 5th grade.
  • Next week we will begin our last unit in Science.
  • We will also be using some of our time in the last weeks to do some mapping work.

Math Testing Dates

  Dear Parents,

On  Thursday, May 15th, your student will be taking the  Fast Track Math assessment. The score from this untimed test will serve as a significant data point for identifying advanced learning opportunities and services. On Friday, May 16th, your student will be taking the Bridges Interim Assessment #3.  Please ensure your student arrives on time to school and prepared to do their best.

  • This week we continued with Module 3 Unit 3.  We will be answering the question "How have athletes broken barriers during the historical era in which they lived?" 
  • In Unit 3, we will be comparing various athletes that broke some type of a barrier.  We will compare and contrast the factors that led these athletes to break a social barrier with what we have learned about Jackie Robinson. 
  • This week worked hard to finish our Compare and Contrast Essay.
  • Next week, we will work on our final projects where we will create some posters that express our learning. 
  • This will be our LAST unit of this module!!
  • For ALL Block, we continue to work with vocabulary words, writing responses to our reading and fluency work.  
Social Studies--
  • We continued and finished up mini-unit for social studies this week on the Ojibway.  
  • We used the text The Mishomis Book--The Voice of the Ojibway written by Edward Benton-Benai.  
  • We learned about their migration story and how it connects to northern Wisconsin.
Social Studies/Science
  • Next week we will take time to do our Human Growth and Development lessons for 5th grade.
