New News

    Oldie, but Goodies
    • Randall Book Fair will be the week of May 11th-15th.  If you would like to donate funds for our classroom libraries, the links are below:
    • Over the next few weeks, we will engage in our final round of MMSD assessments for the year.  Your child will be assessed on reading fluency, reading comprehension, microphases (spelling) and a final math interim assessment.   
    • Human Growth and Development Dates

    •  We have sent home permission slips for two more field trips at beginning of June.  We will need parent volunteers to join us at Lake Kegonsa to allow for more freedom of activities with smaller groups.  PLEASE consider joining us on Thursday, June 4th.  Chaperones do need to be Level 2 approved.  Here is the link you can use to make this happen. Please do this asap if you plan to join us so that the your application has time to be approved.  We can't allow parent chaperones who have not gone through this process to attend.  This is an MMSD rule.

    Math
    •  Unit 7 in our Bridges Curriculum will focus on division of whole numbers and fractions.  
    • This week we continued our work at a deeper level and started to integrate these skills with story problems. 
    • During the week of May 11, we will work in Unit 7 and take a district assessment for math at the end of the week. 
    • During the week of May 18th, we will work in Unit 7 and take the Bridges Interim Assessment #3.
    • During the week of May 22nd we will officially finish the 5th grade Bridges curriculum and for the remainder of the year, we will revisit some skills that could use some extra practice before summer. 
    • May Number Corner will focus on ordered pairs, coordinate grids, customary units in measuring volume with liquids and using conversion strategies to go from cups to ounces.
    Literacy this week
    • This week we continued our work in Module 3 of EL titled-- Athlete Leaders of Social Change.  
    • We are reading a non-fiction text called  Promises to Keep by Sharon Robinson. She is the daughter of Jackie Robinson and we will learn a lot about his personal and professional history and his journey to become an inspirational athlete for social change. 
    • We will continue to work on speaking and writing about what we read.  
    • This week we FINISHED our comparison essay between Jackie Robinson's factors for success with another athlete that broke a social barrier.
    • We then worked on a final project for this module.  They are creating and will present a slideshow on Factors of Success for Athlete Leaders of Social Change.  
    • Once this module is complete, students will be choosing chapter books among various genres to simply read and then, using a variety of activity options, summarize their book. 
    • For our ALL block this week, we engaged in various reading skill activities that include: fluency work, summarizing, discussion, grammar and vocabulary.  
    • Each classroom is doing a read aloud as well!  Ask your 5th grader what book we are using.


    Science --Patterns of Earth and Sky--Complete 
    Our third unit in science will be: Patterns of Earth and Sky as we answer the question:
    Why do we see different stars at different times?
    • Our first chapter will focus on :  Why don't we see a lot of stars in the daytime?
    • Our second chapter will focus on :  Why is the sun up sometimes, but not other times? 
    • Our third chapter will focus on :  Why do we see different stars at different times of                                                                                                                            the year?
    • Our fourth chapter will focus on :  How can we investigate why we see different                                                                       stars on different nights?

    We started our fourth unit of science this week: Earth Systems as we answer the question:
    What can determine how much water is available for human use?

    • Next Thursday we head to Vilas Park on the last day of school!!  Please make sure your kiddos have their sunscreen, bug spray, appropriate clothing and shoes, hat, EXTRA WATER, a backpack to carry their lunch and water, listening ears and a great attitude :)
    • Cross your fingers that the weather holds......we may need to pivot if it is raining or storming...

    • Whenever we can find some time in these past few weeks, we will be doing some map skills learning about the United States. 
    Science
    Our fourth unit will be on Earth Systems:  We will work to answer the question: What can determine how much water is available for human use?

    • Our first chapter will focus on : Why is East Ferris running out of water while West Ferris is not? 
    • Our second chapter will focus on : Why does more rain form over West Ferris than East Ferris? 
    • Our third chapter will focus on : Why is there more water vapor getting cold over West Ferris than East Ferris?
    • Our fourth chapter will focus on : Why is there more water vapor high up over West  Ferris than East Ferris?
    • Our fifth chapter will focus on : How can East Ferris turn wastewater into clean freshwater? 
    SELS/Health lessons
    • We are finished with all of our SELS and Health lessons for the year. 
    • Randall Way Video for May is shared in your 5th grader's Google Classroom.  Our May goal is 1,100 paws by being an ALLY to try and earn a popsicle treat.

    • Unit 7 focus is on division of fractions and whole numbers. We are exploring different division strategies and with whole number, fractions and decimals. 
    • This week we worked with multiplication and division involving powers of 10.  
    • Next we will finish up Unit 7, review and assess the whole unit. 
    • After Unit 7 we will reflect on the areas of the 5th grade curriculum that might need a bit more review and that will take us to the end of the year :) 
    • Our May Number Corner will be focused on ordered pairs/graphing skills and converting liquid measurement from customary units to metric units.

      In order for Thursday, June 5th to be a success, we need as many parent volunteers as possible.  More parents allow for smaller groups and flexibility for everyone.  If you are able, we would appreciate any help on June 5th.

      In order for you to be a chaperone, you will need to be approved for Level 2 volunteering tasks which involves a background check.  I recognize this can be an inconvenience, but unless we have you on our Level 2 approved list, we can not allow you to join us........  start the process by visiting the
